CHAPTER 23

virginia beach, virginia

1322 local time

Jun raised the pair of compact binoculars to his eyes and focused on the young mother as she strapped her daughter into a car seat in the back of a white Nissan Rogue parked in the driveway of a modestly sized, upscale two-story house.

“Is that them?” Damien asked from the driver’s seat of their rental car.

“Yes,” Jun said, guessing the American SEAL’s little girl to be three or four years old at the most.

“What’s the plan?

“Kill the wife and kidnap the daughter. Then, we use the child as bait and lure the SEAL—and hopefully his companions—into a kill box to eliminate them just like we did the other team. Garth is scouting locations as we speak,” Jun said, watching the woman give the child butterfly kisses, to the toddler’s delight, before closing the door and climbing into the driver’s seat.

“You’re cold as ice, mon ami. I hope I never piss you off.”

Jun ignored the comment and lowered the binoculars. “Follow them.”

The Frenchman put the transmission in Drive, spun the wheel, and pulled away from the curb. Ten seconds later, they were tailing the Nissan through the streets of Virginia Beach with a proper offset. He did not expect the woman to notice she was being surveilled, but Damien was a pro and well-versed in tradecraft.

“When do you want to do it?”

“As soon as we get the green light from Hoffman,” Jun said, shifting uncomfortably in his seat.

The work was taking a toll. Despite not having jumped for almost two weeks, his hips really bothered him today. He pulled a foil pill pack from his left front pocket, tore it open, and popped two hospital-strength anti-inflammatory painkillers into his mouth.

“And in the meantime?” Damien asked, glancing at him sideways.

Jun dry-swallowed the pills with the saliva he had in his mouth, then said, “We learn her routine and identify the perfect place to take them.”
